I represented Twyford on the Wokingham District Council and then Wokingham Borough Council from 1994 to 2012 when I had to stand down on becoming head of my university department. I was head of the History Department at University College London from 2012 – 2015. Having finished my stint as head of department, I have returned to my normal teaching and research duties and so have had time to resume as a borough councillor.

When I was last on the Council I served on the planning committee(as its Chairman for 2 years) and as Chairman and deputy leader of the Liberal Democrat Group. I also served on the Scrutiny Committee and the Overview and Scrutiny Committee.
