Make the Marketplace Safe for the Visually Impaired

We the undersigned petition Wokingham Borough Council to make the marketplace safe for the visually impaired

Currently there is no contrast in colour between the kerb and the edge of the road, the blister studs at crossings are barely detectable, and the correct use of tactile paving at crossings has not been used, (red paving should be used at controlled crossings to allow people to differentiate). The disabled and loading bays are also on the pavement area which is confusing for most people, let alone the visually impaired. The actual raised crossings are also the same colour as the pavement which is confusing.

From the perspective of someone who is partially sighted, there is no obvious visual indication of the limits of the footway at both crossings and at the kerb sides. Partially sighted people are assisted by strong colour contrasts which the marketplace currently does not have.

We propose that the edge of the pavements be painted in a contrasting colour to indicate where the edge is, the disabled and loading bays are lowered to the level of the road with a strong, detectable kerb edge and clear signage is used, red tactile paving is installed at controlled crossings, the blister studs at the uncontrolled crossings are replaced with some that stand out more (particularly visually), and the raised crossing areas themselves are resurfaced to match the colour of the black road.
