Anti-Poverty Strategy

We the undersigned petition Wokingham Borough Council to co-produce an anti-poverty strategy.

Poverty is a big issue in Wokingham Borough. For example, 17% of the borough's children live in relative poverty after housing costs and 3,500 households are in fuel poverty. The issues of poverty and the inequalities it creates however go beyond the statistics. There are thousands of families that aren't technically classed as living in poverty, but who struggle to provide the essentials day to day. This is only set to get worse as the pandemic continues.

There are a number of front-line poverty charities in the borough who help those in need, treating the symptoms of poverty and those who are struggling to manage. What the borough needs is a co-ordinated strategic approach to not just treat the symptoms, but tackle the cause as well. This is why we are calling on Wokingham Borough Council to lead in co-producing with these front-line charities and appropriate partners an anti-poverty strategy that will tackle the issue at a local level. The strategy will benefit families in poverty and low-income families to ensure that no-one in the borough is in need.
