Ban Blue Plastic Bin Bags

We the undersigned petition Wokingham Borough Council to Ban Blue Plastic Bin Bags!

I call for a ban of the blue plastic bin bags to save the environment and our borough council.

Given that the private sector and enterprises have adopted the plastic bag charge in order to reduce plastic bag usage, i propose that we as a progressive town (and a civilised borough) reject the plastic bags for waste collection.

One option would be to replace these with large wheelie bins one for recycling (RED) and another for General waste (BLACK).

This will reduce the amount of plastic bags used by our town and if anything recycle any existing plastic to produce wheelie bins or atleast promote it indirectly.

(Rough calculation assuming 100K households multiplied by 52 weeks = 5.2million bags used per year)

Also given the bins are larger size and are covered (airtight lids), we could potentially reduce the collection frequency to every 10 days. This will also save a zillion travel miles done by the waste bin lorries and reduce associated emissions and hopefully will save some money for the council and our pockets.

Any savings obtained can be invested in better waste sorting machines if that is a concern.

This is successfully used by many other boroughs - Reading Borough & Slough Borough council.

As a bare minimum we should trial this in a few areas and see if this benefits the community.
