Installation of height barriers in all council car parks

We the undersigned petition Wokingham Borough Council to Install suitable height barriers in all council car parks that do not have them in order to stop illegal incursions by travellers and others.

Woodley Conservatives, on behalf of Woodley residents, are becoming increasingly alarmed at the ease of access travellers have to council car parks and the lengthy legal process to remove them . In the last six months they have experienced this twice in the Crockhamwell Road and Lytham Road car parks.

Residents feel extremely intimidated by the travellers and avoid not only the area but Woodley itself. It has a large knock on effect to shops as well with an increase in dubious activities and a drop in their takings as residents take their business elsewhere.

But it is not only Woodley shops that suffer the council loses significant income as the car park becomes unusable. It does not stop there as the lengthy legal process and the clean up costs add to overall cost of these incursions.

The installation of height barriers is a simple task with minimal costs involved. Those costs will soon be repaid through car park income and the removal of legal and clean up costs.

Whilst we recognise that this measure cannot guarantee incursions will not happen in the future they will act as a deterrent.
